Is a 2kW Solar System right for me?

Choosing the right solar panel system for you comes down to your average annual energy usage as a household. Not every house in the UK will need solar panel systems producing the maximum possible power. Some might be looking for a complete off grid kit when they shop for solar systems, but most will be content with solar panels that provide power for most of their daily activities, without needing them to supply enough for multiple solar batteries.

As a general guide, a 2kW solar system can produce around 5kWh of electricity each day (amounting to around 1800kWh of annual electricity). It’s estimated that 1 bedroom houses with 1-2 individuals living in it will use around 1800kWh of electricity each year. If you aren’t looking for a solar panel system to cover all of your energy usage each year, then most UK homes could make use of a 2kW solar system to power some of their household appliances.

How do 2kW systems work to power your home?

Solar PV panels (photovoltaic) work by harnessing energy from the sun and turning it into usable power for your home. The PV cells in the panel absorb the solar energy from the sun which creates electrical charges that are activated by the internal electrical field of the PV cell which then flows. This current is Direct Current (DC) which isn’t usable in UK homes, so it must be sent to a solar inverter which changes the current from DC to AC (Alternating Current) which is usable in UK homes.

Throughout the day, in theory, there should be an uninterrupted power supply, provided your solar panels aren’t in shade or in poor conditions throughout the day. To maximise efficiency solar panels should be arranged on a roof at an angle that allows for better absorption of solar energy. Our solar installers will confer with your solar panel specifications to ensure optimum set up and the correct operating voltage range for maximum results.

Is an on-grid or off-grid 2kW solar system better?

This depends entirely on your needs and the power usage of your home. An on-grid solar power system will mean you occasionally rely on the National Grid to power your home when your solar panels aren’t producing enough energy to meet your needs. This is a good backup option in the event of your solar panels failing to meet your energy demands, and it makes sense for a 2kW solar system, given that they don’t produce a lot of energy throughout the day to meet energy demands and store up energy in solar batteries.

An off grid solar kit may be possible for those who have significantly reduced energy demands compared to typical UK averages and who can enjoy maximum power voltage throughout the day due to optimal conditions and location. Mostly, though, a 2kW solar panel system will not really be suitable for off grid setups. If you are considering going fully off grid, then work with our solar experts to create a solar array that meets those needs.

2kW Solar System Advantages

Long Lasting Modern Panels

Most premium quality products come with a much longer service life compared to older panels, meaning you can benefit from modern panels with an estimated lifespan of around 25 years+. Modern monocrystalline solar panels can last as long as 40 years in some circumstances and with proper solar maintenance once a year.

Switch To Green Energy

A switch to green energy means a reduced household carbon footprint. Given that solar energy is a form of renewable energy, you’ll also be switching to an energy that is an infinite resource to power your home. Unlike fossil fuels which will, one day, run out, solar energy will be here to stay, so you’ll be future-proofing your home at the same time by going solar.

Reduced Energy Bills

Solar energy is free energy. It doesn’t need to be processed in power plants and delivered to your home – it’s readily available, it’s there every day, and you just need to invest in the solar panels that are capable of harnessing that energy and turning it into useful power for your home. This means you don’t pay for all the energy you use every day, so your annual energy bills will be greatly reduced, if not, nonexistent.

Get Back In Charge Of Your Energy Use

You can make use of things like remote system monitoring with modern solar panels, allowing you to dictate how and when your energy is used. Given that most of us are at work during the day, when solar panels are producing the electricity we need, you might consider setting certain household appliances to work remotely so you can make the most of your solar power when it’s being generated.

2kW Solar System Disadvantages

Less Likely To Be Appropriate For Solar Batteries

Because 2kW solar systems only produce around 5kWh of electricity each day – appropriate for a 1 bedroom house with 1-2 people living in it, on average – there’s really no need for solar batteries. Whilst this might not seem like a negative, since a solar battery will increase the cost of a solar system, it means you can only use electricity generated by the panels as soon as they do, or else it will be wasted.

Relies On Optimal Conditions

Smaller solar systems are capable of producing less electricity, which means you need to optimise the set up to ensure its operating in optimal conditions for as much of the day as possible to keep squeezing as much energy as possible out of your system. If poorly set up, you could notice a serious dip in output with a 2kW solar system.

2kW Solar System FAQs

Some of the most common questions about 2kW solar systems are answered for you here…

Solar system costs vary depending on things like your panel type and brand, system size, and the difficulty and location of the installation (customers living in the South of England will, on average, pay more for their solar systems than those living in the North).

For reference, it’s estimated that a 2kW solar panel system will cost around £4,000-£4,500 on average, but again, the final number will differ based on a range of factors.

For an accurate, free, and no-obligation quote, work with our solar experts today.

This depends on the maximum output of the panels you pick. The most common size solar panels in the UK for residential properties are generally either 250W or 400W panels.

A 2kW solar panel system will require:

  • 8 x 250W solar panels

OR

  • 5 x 400W solar panels

Savings will vary based on how much of your energy usage you cover with a 2kW solar system and how much you rely on the National Grid for your power. Obviously if your 2kW solar system produces enough power for your household that you don’t require any power from the National Grid, then your energy bills will be slashed to £0.

It’s much more likely that you’ll require some power from your solar panels and some from the Grid, however, meaning your energy bills will be significantly reduced, but not be cut to £0. Estimates vary based on how much energy you use, etc, but most solar installation experts will agree that savings of between 70 and 90% are reasonable to expect.
