What can a 4kW Solar System do for me?

The key to making the most of your 4kW solar panel setup is ensuring that it actually covers your electricity usage each day, month, and year so that you aren’t relying on the National Grid for your electricity and you can enjoy full energy independence: this is the key to saving money with any size solar panel system. Better yet if you can store excess energy in battery storage to boot, and sell that energy to the Grid to make a little extra cash on top.

A 4kW solar system has the capacity to generate around 10kWh of electricity, and up to around 16kWh when conditions are optimal. Given that the average 3 bed house with 2-3 individuals living there only uses around 8kWh daily, and a 4 bed with 4-5 household members uses around 12kWh daily, a solar system of this size should be appropriate for either household depending on how much electricity usage they want to cover with their solar panels vs the National Grid.

How many panels will a 4kW system require?

This depends entirely on the type of solar panel you opt for and its capacity for power generation. With the two most popular panel sizes being 250W or 400W, we’ll provide you with a general example below, but you’ll really need to work with our solar panel design team to figure out a configuration that is both cost effective and suitable for your roof space.

Work with a member of our team today to help you rely on a more environmentally friendly option for powering your home without having to rely on carbon-emitting fossil fuels. We can design a solar system for you that slashes your electricity bills and powers your whole home all day (and night, with battery storage).

How expensive is a 4kW solar system?

The final price of a 4kW solar panel system varies from customer to customer based on a variety of factors such as:

  • solar panel make, model, brand, and size
  • how many solar panels you need to complete the system
  • any optional extras you might choose such as solar battery storage
  • solar inverter option
  • length and difficulty of the installation

All of these factors will affect your final bill, but as a guide, a 4kW solar system will cost around £9,000 to £10,000.

4kW Solar System Advantages

Efficient Energy Generation

Of course, the amount of energy your solar panels generate will vary depending on things like weather conditions and system size (a larger system will almost always produce more energy), but solar panels are almost universally efficient at producing enough energy for your home in the UK, granting you greater energy independence.

Reduction In Energy Bills

By generating your own energy at home, you reduce your reliance on the National Grid significantly, but that also cuts your electricity bills – potentially to £0. Obviously the exact amount of savings you’ll make depends on your household’s electricity usage, and the amount of energy your system produces, but you will almost certainly save a significant amount when you switch to solar.

Environmentally Friendly Option

Solar energy is a form of green, renewable energy. That means it doesn’t rely on fossil fuels to power it, so you aren’t emitting carbon into the atmosphere when you use solar panels to power your home. By cutting down on the amount of carbon your household emits, you’ll have a smaller carbon footprint and you’ll be actively making the world a greener place.

Suitable For A Range Of Households

Perhaps the biggest advantage of a solar panel installation is the fact that it is so accessible in the UK. As solar installers, we rarely come across households where solar panels aren’t appropriate. And with solar finance options available with ESE, the cost of solar panels can be more easily spread out, helping even more households access solar technology.

4kW Solar System Disadvantages

Prohibitive Upfront Costs

Despite our talk of solar finance, we’re not blind to the fact that the cost of solar is high – and sometimes prohibitively so for some households. As solar technology continues to be prioritised across the UK and more and more households switch, prices will inevitably come down as competition in the market increases – but for now, you might find the cost just a little too high.

Takes Up A Lot Of Roof Space

If roof space at your home is limited, then finding the space for solar panels will almost be impossible. With the right amount of land surrounding your property a ground mounted solar system may be possible, but this would seriously impact the amount of garden space you can enjoy. Where roof space is limited, solar panels may simply not be possible.

4kW Solar System FAQs

Some of the most common questions about 4kW solar systems are answered for you here…

A 4kW solar panel system will generate around 10kWh worth of energy to be used by your home each day. This equates to around 3650kWh over the course of a year – although the final number will vary depending on things like your location, time of year, and whether or not shading is an issue for your solar panels.

Whilst you should expect your solar panels to produce something close to these numbers at your home, they will inevitably vary. Get to know what’s normal for your system, and then you can notice issues should something arise.

A 10kWh solar battery is usually sufficient for a 4kW solar system given that 10kWh is about what your solar panels are capable of producing each day. Of course, you can have whatever size solar battery you desire, but generally speaking, a battery storage system that can accommodate a full day of powering your home should a problem occur is usually all you need.

Most households in the UK won’t require planning permission for solar panels at their property, but you will if you’re in a listed building, conservation area or something similar.

Check with your local council and planning permission department to be sure, but in most cases a 4kW solar panel system will be considered permitted development.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is now the most popular way to make money using your solar panel plus battery storage system. Previously, the Feed-In-Tariff was the main way, but since SEG took over in January 2020, most UK households will make money from their solar panels by selling any excess energy their panels produce back to the Grid via the Smart Export Guarantee.
