Do Solar Panels Have Warranties?
Yes! Most reputable solar panels come with warranties. Like any commercial product, a solar panel warranty is an agreement between the green energy provider and customers and outlines the company’s responsibility for any product defects to ensure long-term functionality.
Generally, most installers or manufacturers offer two warranty types: performance and product warranties. So, what’s the difference between them?
Performance Warranty
As the name suggests, a performance warranty guarantees optimal solar panel output. Over time, the amount of electricity generated by the panels will decrease, a process known as degradation. Don’t worry, though. That’s completely normal — just like how your mobile phone’s performance slows down with time.
However, the panels’ degradation happens at a rate of approximately 0.5% annually. That means, after 20 years, you can expect the module to yield 90% of the electricity output it used to produce when first installed.
As a rule of thumb, most solar panels degrade by around 10%-20% after 20-25 years.
So, what happens if the output rate decreases more than it should have before the former timeframe?
That’s when the performance warranty comes to the rescue! Such insurance guarantees all repairs or replacements needed so that each panel performs within the accepted range.
It’s worth mentioning, however, that the former doesn’t promise a specific amount of energy production. It only guarantees your panels’ performance remains within the mentioned range.
Linear & Step Warranties
Now, there are two types of performance warranties. These are linear and step warranties.
The former estimates the degradation rate per year. For example, you can expect your panel’s electricity production to be 98% after the first year, 97% in the second, and so on. Generally, this type of insurance is the most common.
As for the latter type, it ensures that the energy produced remains above a certain level for a particular duration, usually 10 years. After that, the panel’s performance steps down to a lower range for the rest of its lifespan.
For example, the module will perform at 90% for the first 10 years and then drop to 80% for the following 15 years.
Product Warranty
A product warranty, on the other hand, covers any product-related problems. That includes defects, faulty components, premature wear, and other quality issues that stop the panels from producing electricity.
That said, not all system parts have the same insurance timeframe. Generally, product warranties last for 10 to 12 years. For a more premium option, some manufacturers offer up to 25 years.
As for the components, inverters can have a 10- to 25-year warranty. Likewise, racking and material defects come with 10- to 20-year insurance coverage.
If you’ve added a solar storage system, aka a solar battery, the warranty usually ranges from 5 to 10 years.
While performance and product warranties are separate services, some providers combine them. However, such insurance can only cover basic repairs and guarantee minimum performance.
So, make sure to review what’s included in the contract to know if it meets your needs.
At ESE Group, we offer lengthy solar panel warranties to guarantee your satisfaction with long-term usage. We also provide a battery warranty for up to 12 years. Not to mention, you get 15 years of free maintenance!

Is A Solar Panel Warranty Important?
Solar panel warranties are crucial for several reasons. Sure, those green energy generators are designed to withstand harsh climate conditions. Still, malfunctions can happen.
In fact, solar panels can underperform for several reasons. Low-quality materials are among the factors that reduce electricity output. Such products have thinner frames, less aluminium, and fragile glass. So, they usually wear and tear quickly. Improper installation, climate changes, and a lack of maintenance also cause premature damage.
A solar panel warranty can help you tackle all those issues. Here are some of the benefits you’ll receive with a warranty:
1. Protection Of Investment
Solar panels aren’t cheap; they’re a significant financial investment. A warranty ensures your solar provider will take care of any defects and performance issues during the specified period. Such protection safeguards your investment, alleviating your concerns.
2. Financial Security
Since the product is expensive, it’s only natural that repairs and replacements come at a hefty price. Typically, warranties cover those costs, ensuring you don’t suffer financial losses due to unexpected failures.
3. Quality Assurance
A warranty plan can tell a lot about a solar panel’s quality and the company’s reliability. Manufacturers that offer solid insurance plans are confident about their product’s durability and performance. This assurance can attract customers since it shows that the panel will maintain superb performance for a long time.
4. Potential Profit
Solar panels can help you cut down on paying for electricity, which can save you money in the long run. However, that’s not the only profitable thing about these green energy generators.
Solar panels can add value to your house, increasing its sale price. Combined with a 20+ year warranty, you can expect your property to be more attractive to buyers.
What Doesn't A Solar Panel Warranty Cover?
Although solar panel warranties offer many perks, they can also have some drawbacks. Those potentially include:
- Providers don’t guarantee a specific amount of energy output from the system
- The labour costs of shipping and product inspection aren’t included
- Damages due to natural disasters like fires, floods, lightning, and more aren’t covered
- The warranty doesn’t cover Accidents or any events out of the manufacturer’s control

At ESE Group, we understand the importance of long-term satisfaction. For that reason, we offer comprehensive warranties (for example, 26-year DMEGC warranty), along with a 12-year battery warranty and 15 years of free maintenance!

FAQ's
Some of the most common questions about solar warranties are answered for you here…
Generally, most solar panels can last between 25 and 30 years before they start working at a lower efficiency. However, the lifespan can vary depending on several factors, like climate, installation conditions, panel quality, and maintenance.
To find the best solar panel warranty, look for the following:
- Coverage that lasts for a prolonged time, like 25 years
- Cost coverage for repairs and replacements when the panel and any of the components break
- Transferable warranty with no additional costs
- Quick response time when you call for repairs
Several reasons can void a solar panel warranty, including:
- Installing the panels yourself
- Getting maintenance done by an unregistered contractor or an unlicensed worker
- Repairing the panels using a third party and not the company
- Failing to properly maintain the solar panels
