Solar Panels Supplied and Fitted For New Builds

With more and more awareness about global warming issues, the need for renewable energy rises. That’s why many new homeowners are opting for renewable alternatives like solar PV systems.

Solar panels can power up your home without negatively impacting the environment, and although they often involve a significant investment, this is usually more than covered by the savings during the lifetime of your solar system setup.

If you’re wondering if solar panels for new builds are a good idea, you’ve come to the right place. Here we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about solar panel regulations and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of installing them in new homes.

Solar Panel for New Builds Overview

Solar panels have been around for many decades, but it is in recent years that they’ve gained popularity because of the rising climate, and more recently, the cost of energy crisis.

That’s why the UK took a few measures to counteract the issue. First off, it introduced low-energy homes to reduce the cost of household builds.  This also encourages sustainable living across several communities.

That’s all in an effort to abide by the targets laid out in the Climate Change Act of 2008. If all goes according to plan, the UK should reach Net Zero by the year 2050.

To do that, the country put in place more than a few few rules, some of which impacts on the building of new properties. For example, developers have to consider the energy performance ratings – the so-called Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) – of buildings.

On top of that, there are many regulations that all new homes have to follow.

Regulations for New Builds

When it comes to solar panels for new buildings, there are a few rules you have to keep in mind. In this section, we’ll cover the major regulations that deal with this issue.

Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) Regulations

The SAP regulations are calculations that the government uses to control climate change. They assess and compare the energy and environmental performance of dwellings.

Typically, all buildings get an SAP score between 1 and 100. This number depends on a few factors. These include:

  • Carbon emissions
  • Fuel prices
  • Structure
  • Heating system
  • Lighting
  • Cooling load
  • Energy use per unit floor area
  • Potential for overheating in the summer

The final score indicates the total energy cost of a property. This will give architects general guidelines on the best practices for building designs.

To construct a new dwelling, developers need to match the SAP score. This can be a bit tricky to do with conventional power sources.  That’s why they call upon energy-saving measures, such as solar power.

Building Regulations

The UK has strict building regulations that developers have to follow. In these rules, there’s a specific section that discusses the conservation of fuel and power.

Part L of the Building Regulations goes into detail about what you should do. It states that starting in June 2022, builders have to comply with a few requirements.

That includes reducing the carbon footprint of new homes. Because of that, more builders started considering solar panels for their homes.

The overall Dwelling Emission Rate (DER) should be lower than the Target Emission Rate (TER).

Solar Panels For New Builds Advantages

There are many advantages to installing solar panels on new homes. In this section, we’ll cover the most notable benefits of the practice.

Provide Clean and Renewable Energy

Right off the bat, solar panels can provide homes with a clean source of energy. You won’t need to rely on fossil fuels or the national grid.

This can have a major positive impact on the environment. For example, this will reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building.

Lower Energy Bills

Aside from helping the environment, solar panels can also benefit your bank account.

In the long run, you can significantly reduce your dependence on the national grid. This means your energy bill should be much lower than you’re used to. Some solar power systems can save you up to 70% on your energy bill.

Reduce Costs

If you’re installing solar panels in new homes, chances are you’re using the integrated variety. These structures go directly on top of the roof.

They sit flush on the surface and give the building a modern feel. On top of that, they can reduce your costs. Since the panels completely cover the roof, you won’t need to tile the surface.

Easier Installation

With the new SAP and building rules, solar panels are becoming essential to every home. Even older buildings have to consider the renewable energy source.

When you install the panels on a new structure, the setup should be a breeze. You’ll get to make calculations to ensure that the devices all fit perfectly in place.

That’s not the case when retrofitting solar panels. It may be difficult to integrate them into the original design of the building.

So, adding solar panels from the get-go should lower costs. Plus, the installation will be much easier.

Improve Your BREEAM Score

BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment. This is a method for calculating the sustainability rating of a building.

The higher the score, the more energy efficient the structure is.

To reduce the negative effects of construction, the UK insists on high BREEAM scores. A quick way to boost your numbers is to add solar panels.

Solar Panels For New Builds Disadvantages

Now that the advantages are out of the way, we can focus on the drawbacks. In this section, we’ll cover the most notable disadvantages of solar panels for new builds.

High Initial Cost

The first drawback on our list deals with the initial cost of solar panels.

To start off, you’ll usually need to invest a decent sum to purchase the devices required for your solar array. On top of that, the installation process can also be costly.

Regular Maintenance

To ensure your solar system lasts as long as possible, you’ll need to maintain them regularly. That includes cleaning the panels and other routine check-ups. The process isn’t all that complicated, but it can be tedious.

Not Suitable for All Locations or Structures

Since solar panels rely on sufficient daylight, they’re not suitable for all locations. If you live in a particularly shaded area, then they’re not ideal.

You won’t be able to generate enough energy to justify the initial cost of the devices.

Other than that, not all roof types are compatible with the panels. So, you may have to mount them on the sides of the building. Not only is that tricky to do, but it can also increase installation costs.

High Energy Storage Costs

Solar panels are only operational during the daylight hours. Once the sun sets, they’ll stop generating any power.

That means you’ll only have access to electricity for half the day. To get around this issue, you can install solar batteries.  While these devices can store a large amount of power, they can be expensive.

Solar Panels For New Builds Conclusion

There are a few factors to consider when deciding on solar panels for new builds. For starters, you’ll need to take many rules into account. That includes the UK Building and SAP regulations.

Moving on, there are multiple advantages to installing the panels. That includes lower energy bills, easier installation, and improved BREEAM score.

However, there are also a few disadvantages. For example, solar panels have a high initial cost and require regular maintenance. Thankfully, the cost of your solar setup will usually be more than covered during its lifetime of operation, which will in most cases be in excess of 20 years, if not more.

FAQ's

Some of the most common questions about solar installations are answered for you here…

The answer to this question will depend on a few factors. These include energy consumption, roof size, and sun hours.

For a 3 kW installation, you’ll need about 10 to 12 panels. This should be enough to power small dwellings.

If you’re looking for more energy, then you need a 6 kW installation. With this one, 24 to 26 panels should do the trick.

If your roof can’t accommodate the number of panels you need, there are a couple of solutions. First off, you can install the devices on the side of the building.

Although, you’ll need to consider the angle of the panels.

Other than that, you can install the devices on canopies. This will give you more control over the position of each panel.
